The Prithvi-I was an Indian short-range ballistic missile with a range of 150 km, and was the first in a lineage of indigenous land and sea-based missiles which includes the Prithvi-II, the ship-launched Dhanush, and the Prithvi Air Defence interceptor. The motor and the guidance system are based on the Soviet surface-to-air missile (SAM) product line. The DRDO had originally conceived it in the 1970s, and the missile when ready was 9.5 metres in length and 1 metre in diameter, with a dry weight of 1,500 kg. It was inducted into the Indian Army in 1994.
