Creation of Nagaland Aug 29 1962

On 1st December, 1963, Nagaland became the 16th state of India after a bill was passed in August 1962. Until 1957, it was just a district in the State of Assam, known to some as “The Naga Hills”. That year, an agreement was reached between Naga leaders and the Indian government, creating a single separate region of the Naga Hills. Known for its rich and vibrant culture, Nagaland is also famous for the Hornbill Festival, which was launched fairly recently by the Government of Nagaland to encourage inter-tribal interaction, and to promote cultural heritage of the state.
